The Portuguese Society of Environmental Simulation and Risk Assessment (SOPSAR), officially established on the 12th March 2007, is an independent non-profit association, which aims to promote the advancement of science and technology regarding to Environmental Simulation and Risk Assessment, through the exchange of information and experiences in all related fields. SOPSAR is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary forum, which intends, in the fulfilment of its mission, to facilitate the professional accomplishment in this area, to promote the development of methodologies and procedures, to foster the information exchange and contacts among all professionals, as well as to encourage the development of standards and codes of practice, to sponsor research and education and to organize seminars and workshops. SOPSAR is a member of the Confederation of European Environmental Engineering Societies (CEEES).
Scope:
Environmental simulation and risk assessment involve, in a multidisciplinary way, technicians, engineers and scientists from public and private institutions with professional activity in different branches, namely the following:

• Automobile manufacturers;
• Aviation and space technology;
• Construction;
• Defence technology;
• Electric technology and electronics;
• Environmental technology;
• Insurance companies;
• Natural resources management;
• Transportation and packaging technology.

Environmental simulation and risk assessment are interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary professional fields, of which methodological procedures integrate the identification of environmental factors, its effects under controllable conditions and the assessment of its consequences. Environmental simulation requires different kinds of equipments and tools and might use advanced instrumentation and experimental or numerical methods. Risk assessment applies specific methodologies for uncertainty analysis and consequence scenario studies, integrating hazard identification, probability and vulnerability assessments.
In Portugal, laboratories or centres with such facilities or skills can be found in companies, private and public agencies and R&D institutions.

The Portuguese Society of Environmental Simulation and Risk Assessment (SOPSAR) aims to contribute for the development of more reliable products and equipments for increasing the systems quality or capacity in and environmental point of view, towards the minimisation of accidents and consequence mitigation.

The mission of the Portuguese Society of Environmental Simulation and Risk Assessment (SOPSAR) is:

• To promote the national technology and its competitiveness, innovation and sustainability;
• To establish a forum about environmental analysis and risk assessment procedures and methodologies;
• To foster the information and service exchange and contacts among all professionals and researchers;
• To promote the development of testing, standards and codes of practice;
• To sponsor research, technical and scientific knowledge and education;
• To promote the organization of technical seminars and workshops regarding environmental simulation and risk assessment.
